Salt Cay, after Hurricane Ike

On September 6th, Hurricane Ike (Category 4) descended upon Salt Cay and the Turks and Caicos Islands with winds of 120-160 mph. As you can imagine, the damage was extensive and wide-spread. The power has been out since the storm hit and many people lost their homes. No lives where lost but many people were displaced as their homes where destroyed by the winds.

Through relief efforts of many, many people, Salt Cay is rebuilding. Turks Caicos Utilities arrived this past week to begin the process of restoring power to the island. Through the relief efforts of expats and islanders, roofs have been patched and new roofs will be going on soon. People have pulled together to help one another.

The list of those coming to the aid of the community is long – and I thank God for every one of those dedicated people who have worked tirelessly to help each other.

Links to many pictures of the hurricane and recovery can be found on the Salt Cay website at www.saltcay.org.

Salt Cay Restaurants

The restaurants of Salt Cay are few but varied!

For relaxed dining by the Sea, the Coral Reef Bar & Grill has great views of the harbor, the divers coming in from their dives and the humpback whales swimming by. Don't miss Ribs Night on Sunday nights!

Island Thyme Bistro is located just east of the harbor in a island home that has been converted into a lively, fun place to sample some great drinks and good food. Their Pizza Night is great.

If you're looking for a bite of Salt Cay's local food, try Pat's Place in the South District of the island for some great cracked conch dinners.

There is a little snack place called the Green Flash that has Wings on Wednesday and is a cute place to grab a cold drink when they are open.
